- Kapitel 23 -

1
When Sarah was 127 years old,

she died at the city of Kiriath Arba, which is now called Hebron, in the land of Canaan. Then Abraham mourned over her.

He left the body of his wife and spoke to some of the descendants of Heth. He said,
4
“I am a temporary settler living among you, so I do not own any land here. Sell me some land here so that I can bury my wife’s body.”
5
They replied to him,
6
“Sir, you are a powerful man among us. Choose one of our finest tombs and bury your wife’s body in it. None of us will refuse to sell land to you for a tomb for your wife’s body.”
7
Then Abraham stood up and bowed in respect in front of the people who owned the land, the descendants of Heth.
8
He said to them, “If you say that you are willing for me to bury my wife’s body here, listen to me, and ask Ephron son of Zohar,
9
to sell me the cave in the Machpelah area, which is at the end of his field. Ask him to sell it to me for the full price he wants, and to sell it to me in front of you all. In this way I can have a burial ground.”
10
Now Ephron was sitting among the people at the city gate where many descendants of Heth had gathered. He had heard what Abraham said to them.
11
Ephron said, “No, sir, listen to me. I will give to you the field and the cave in it, without charge, with the people here as witnesses. Please bury your wife there.”
12
Abraham again bowed before the people who lived in the land,
13
and said to Ephron, as all the others were listening, “No, listen to me. If you are willing, I will pay for the field. You tell me what the price is, and I will give it to you. If you accept it, the field will become mine, and I can bury my wife’s body there.”
14
Ephron answered Abraham, saying to him,
15
“Sir, listen to me. The land is worth four hundred pieces of silver. But the price is not important to you and me. Give me the money and bury your wife’s body there.”
16
Abraham agreed with Ephron about the price, and weighed for Ephron the four hundred pieces of silver he had suggested, as everyone was listening. He used the standard weights for silver used by people who sold things.

So Ephron’s field in the Machpelah area, near Mamre, and the cave in the field, and all the trees that were in the field and those marking the land’s boundary, they all became Abraham’s possession.

This is how Abraham bought the property, as all the descendants of Heth were listening there at the city gate.
19
After that, Abraham buried his wife Sarah’s body in the cave in the field in the Machpelah area near Mamre, which is now called Hebron, in the land of Canaan.
20
So the field and the cave in it were officially sold to Abraham by the descendants of Heth, for him to use as a burial ground.

Sarahs Tod und Begräbnis

Sara aber lebte hundert und siebenundzwanzig Jahre.
2
Und sie starb in der Stadt Arbee, das ist Hebron, im Lande Chanaan; und Abraham kam, sie zu beklagen und zu beweinen.
3
Und als er sich von der Totenfeier erhoben hatte, redete er also zu den Söhnen Heths:

Ich bin ein Ankömmling und Fremdling bei euch; gebet mir eine erbeigene Begräbnisstätte bei euch, meinen Toten zu bestatten.
5
Da antworteten die Söhne Heths und sprachen:
6
Höre uns, o Herr! als ein Fürst Gottes weilst du bei uns; bestatte deinen Toten in den erlesensten unserer Gräber, und keiner wird es dir verweigern können, dass du deinen Toten in seinem Grabmale bestattest.
7
Da erhob sich Abraham, und verneigte sich vor dem Volke des Landes, den Söhnen Heths,
8
und sprach zu ihnen: Ist es euch genehm, dass ich meinen Toten begrabe, so höret mich und leget für mich bei Ephron, dem Sohne Seors, Fürsprache ein,
9
dass er mir die doppelte Höhle gebe, die er am Ende seiner Ackerflur besitzt; für den vollen Wert möge er sie mir vor euch zum erbeigenen Begräbnisse überlassen.
10
Ephron aber wohnte unter den Söhnen Heths. Da antwortete Ephron dem Abraham, dass es alle hörten, die in das Tor jener Stadt eingingen, und sprach:

Nicht also soll es geschehen, mein Herr! sondern höre vielmehr, was ich sage: Ich überlasse dir den Acker und die Höhle, die darin ist, in Gegenwart der Söhne meines Volkes; bestatte deinen Toten!

Da verneigte sich Abraham vor dem Volke des Landes
13
und sprach zu Ephron vor dem umstehenden Volke: Ich bitte, du wollest mich hören! Ich gebe das Geld für den Acker; nimm es an, und so bestatte ich daselbst meinen Toten.
14
Ephron aber antwortete:
15
Mein Herr, höre mich! Das Land, das du verlangst, ist vierhundert Sekel Silbers wert; das ist der Kaufpreis zwischen mir und dir, aber was ist das? Bestatte deinen Toten!
16
Als Abraham dies vernommen, wog er das Geld dar, welches Ephron vor den Söhnen Heths verlangt hatte, vierhundert Sekel Silbers bewährter gangbarer Münze.
17
So ward der vormalige Acker Ephrons, in dem eine doppelte Höhle, Mambre gegenüber, lag, der Acker sowohl als auch die Höhle, und alle Bäume auf demselben, die ringsherum in seinem Bereiche standen,
18
dem Abraham als Eigentum bestätigt, angesichts der Söhne Heths und aller, die in das Tor jener Stadt eintraten.
19
Und so bestattete Abraham sein Weib Sara in der doppelten Höhle des Ackerfeldes, welches Mambre gegenüber lag, das ist Hebron im Lande Chanaan.
20
Und der Acker mit der Höhle darauf wurde Abraham zum erbeigenen Begräbnis von den Söhnen Heths bestätigt.
